I am a scottish painter working with subject matter that reflects my awareness of the fragility and transience of life: the tide and flow of the sea, its constantly shifting yet continuous presence; plant and bird imagery, symbolic of our own mortality. I am inspired by the light and atmosphere of the landscape I grew up in, its ability to make us feel vulnerable, ecstatic and the importance of respecting it in all its elements. At their very essence, the materials I choose to work with - watercolour, egg tempera, pencil, paper, oil on gesso and linen - physically embody my concerns.
